What happens when you repurpose professional care robots for education? You bring technology to life and turn programming into something students genuinely enjoy.
With the help of Nobleo, two SARA Robots originally developed for elderly care, are now used in the classroom at SG Were Di in Valkenswaard.
Thanks to the dedication of Noblean Matthijs Hajer, the robots were completely reprogrammed: new firmware, custom-made educational software and a setup tailored to programming education in secondary schools. The result? Students can now program real, responsive robots using Python,Β a hands-on introduction to coding.
The technical foundation was explored by Noblean Bram Fenijn, after which Matthijs turned unused hardware into an inspiring tool for learning and engagement. A great example of meaningful reuse through engineering.
From the next school year on, students will take control: writing their own code, seeing their commands come to life and discovering how fun and concrete Python programming for students can be. Not just for senior classes, but also for younger students working with simplified robotics modules.
This initiative shows how robots in secondary education can spark curiosity, increase engagement and build technical skills.
Special thanks to Informatics teacher Otger van Delft and the team at Were Di for their enthusiasm and collaboration. We wish all students and teachers lots of success and fun exploring these robots and coding!
